Photojournalism
Journalism through pictures in order to tell a story , usually of warzones or other areas of conflict.
Don Mccullin
Born in 1935, in finsbury park , Mccullin grew up in a changing London - as the British Nationality Acto of 1947 led to an influx of immigrants from all over the commonwealth. In his Photojournalist years he worked mainly for The Times Newspaper taking pictures of the war in Vietnam- he went back 15 times during the conflict , the warxone yielded some of his most iconic photographs , such as the shell shocked soldier seen below. However he was not just a war conflict photographer. He also took to documenting poverty in britain.
Lynsey Addario
An american Photojournalist born in 1973. She began her career in 1996, with no proffessional training as a photographer, but an excellent eye for composing a photograph saying she sometimes "literarlly gasps" when it comes together. Addario focuses on contempopary conflict zones and especially on the plight of women - she travelled to Afghanistan in 2000 to document life under Taliban rule. Another one of her female based works in the middle east being "Veiled rebellion", which was published in National Geographic. However she also strays into domestic documentary as in her project "Healthcare in Mississipi" which shows the plights of people who live in an area whith the highest rates of obeasity , AIDS and infant mortality.
Francis Meadow Sutcliff .
Francis Meadow Sutcliff started his career as a documentary photographer when it was still a relatively new career path. Sutcliff disliked the stiff poses created by other photographers (as the shutter speeds were so slow) as wanted to create more natural portraits of his subjects. He therefore had his subjects pose as they would naturally as well as taking documentary photographs in his area of the traditional lifestyles of the people.
Martin Parr
Martin Parr is a British documentary photographer who mostly concerns himself with documenting everyday life in first world countries. His photos are often garish and kitsch leading him to be called "Thatchers favourite photographer" by Phillip Jones Griffiths, for his unsavoury presentation of the working class in Britain. However Parr sees his photos differently stating his photographs are as much of the "front line" as those taken by conflict photographers. He was almost denied entry to Magnum, a prestegious photogrpahy agency due to the controvosy over the meaning in his photos - are they mocking or simply showing it how it is?
