Fairy Tales or The Bloody Chamber

I chose to use the word fairy tales as my starting point for this project, I wasnt interested in sanitised fairytales that are told in todays society, but in the origional grimms versions that were much darker and I felt left much more to be explored photographically.

Shoot 1

For this shoot I used this picture "The Spirit of Photography" by Anne Brigman as a starting point. I first saw the picture at an exhibition in the Science Museum called drawn by light. I really liked the pictorialist influences on the image and also the mysical air of it , i thought it would fit in well with my fairytale pictures.

I wanted to carry on the technique of mixing media in my images as I had in my previous project, I decided to create traditional pen and ink drawings that are popular for illustrating fairtytales and add them to my created image.

The Bloody Chamber(Shoot 2)

I read Angela Carter's The Bloody chamber , which is a retelling of traditional fairytales to have a dark edge. The fairytales touched on the idea of lost innocence, which i thought would be very good for my photography. I decided to try and tell the story of the title tale "The Bloody Chamber" (a retelling of Bluebeard).

I made sure that the model was always wearing white - or perceived to wear white to infer her innocence in the story.

Sidsel Sorensen

Aimee Lockwood

Joanna Houghton

I chose these illustration references (Above) as they are examples of other artists work portraying the main character in The Bloody Chamber, as seen Sorensen and Lockwood both focus on the necklace in the story , I also chose to use this as a focal point , however the reference on the far left by Houghton, instead focuses on the dark character of Marquis ( the man) and another significant plot point ( the blood on the forhead). I experimented with focusing on both of these objects in my editing.
